Question: I have a 2005 nickel, the face of the president is not centered, could this be a rare nickel? thanks


My Answer: Saundra, the nickel you describe is part of the "Westward Journey" Nickel Series which were minted from 2004-2006 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase and the journey of Lewis and Clark to explore the new territory.

Saundra, I don't think I made my explanation clear enough in my original answer.

The coin you describe is not a rare coin. All of the nickels minted in 2005 had this portrait of Jefferson's profile off to the left side.

Your nickel is worth face value.

I have a 2004 Lousiana Purchase nickel. I was reading that if you hold the nickel with jefferson facing upright and towards you. Holding the nickel on the left and right side and flipping it like a calender. If the "shaking hands" are upright, where the jefferson is also upright on the other side. Meaning the reverse was stamped upside down. That this is considered a "coin turn" nickel and its rare and worth more? I couldnt find much else on this but im curious if i have a rare coin.

Don, most U.S. coins were minted with what is referred to as "coin alignment". If flipped over from top to bottom, the reverse remains upright in relation to the obverse. When flipped from side-to-side, the reverse is upside down in relation to the obverse.

From your description, it sounds like you have a normal U.S. 2004 Nickel. 180 degree rotation errors are very rare.

I found a 2004 Louisianna Purchase nickel that I think is printed with 180 degree rotation. It was marked with a masking tape and a number which made me really look at it.

If I hold the nickel in the upward position facing me and rotate it left to right/right to left by holding it in the middle, the opposite side facing me is in the upward postion. If I hold it on the left/right sides and flip it up and over the reverse side is upside down.

Is this the rare coin with 180 degree rotation? And if so, how do I cash it in without getting ripped off? Any help given would be great.

My little brother came to me and said he found a nickel, I took a look at it and I've never seen anything like it. It is a 2005 nickel, it has the off centered president, wich I've seen before on the 2005 nickels but the strange part is on the back of the nickel is a buffalo, the buffalo almost looks like a different color than the other nickels I have. I've tried to wash it to see if it was just a prank but it wouldn't come off.. it looks like a holographic color and I have taken a few photos, is it a rare nickel or a prank?

I have three 2004 nickels on the backside is the Louisiana purchase but something caught my eye I thought I was seeing things but I was looking at the head in the upright position and turn the nickel from left to right or vise versa and they are all upside down like they were turned 180 degrees and one of them has a perfect circle in the middle of the face like It's was a mistake

Good morning,I recently found a 1943 P jefferson nickle, it is very shiny almost chrome is this a mint finish, i have a few other war nickles but not as shiny
almost appears as someone painted it with chrome paint, but the finish is very well done?? Hmm thanks for any input hopefully its not painted, what a thing to do to a coin, also a 05 ocean in view that looks like it was racked up on the reeded edge machine,2 sets of 4 marks various stages of reeding ?and while i have ya lol 1993 lincoln D penny looks like mint employees horsing around 4 extra mint marks on coin obverse and edges havent seen the likes before thanks again.  Unusual 2013 D Nickel

I have come across a 2013 D Nickel that is strange to me in three ways. First, the coin is unusually shiny. Much more so than the 2014 Nickels. Like a mirror image. Second, next to the other Nickels made in 2013 and 2014 this one is a touch wider in its depth. The third reason is this Nickel, when placed with others from 2013 and 2014 makes a distinctly different sound than the others do when tapping together. I was wondering if this is a find or not? Hello, I have a 2004 nickel, can't tell if the mint mark is a D or P. Anyways, The it looks as if the front has a crack like look across Jeffersons face from the left through his face and under the letters liberty. The top half looks 3D and the bottom half looks normal but then near the bottom edge looks dented, is it worth some type of value besides face value?

there was a series of 2005 nickels 4 of them to be exact that was part of set regular nickel, one with a painted back, a holographic and a gold toned nickel. its was part of commemorative series. put out by the u.s mint. i am guessing if you found them loose then some one opened them up for what ever reasons as far as value i couldn't say but considering it is loose and not in its original packaging any value just depreciated out the window.

 six coin set of buffalo nickels. all out of alignment

I have a sealed set of six buffalo nickels. Five of them are clearly out of alignment. The sixth one may be as well. If it is, it's not by very much. I've been collecting for a couple of years now, so I know that these coins are clearly out of alignment. The degree of rotation varies from coin to coin. It looks to me that a couple of them could be as much as 30-45 degrees. It looks like someone deliberately put this set together based on them being of this character. I have never sold any of my coins as of yet, but my current health situation could use some help. Can you help me?

I have a nickle that appears to be very old. There is no date that I can see, but the coin has a heavy patina. There is what appears to be a war ship n the back side. The ship has billowing sails and little men, standing on deck. Them are holding long sticks and appear to be rowing. Can you tell me about this coin?

I have a 1955 nickel I got in some change today, and the R in "trust" is backwards. Is this common or counterfeit? The rest of the coin looks legit everything seems to be correct. It weighs 4.9 grams, it has the D mint mark on it also if that helps. Any insight to my coin would be greatly appreciated thanks again for you help.

have found a "five cent" piece that has symbol of handshake and double (what looks like) crossed axes on one side and what looks like a resemblance of Thomas Jefferson on the other side. Also reads "United States of ??? on face side and a # that might be 1603 or 1803 on it. Can anyone tell me where this coin might be from?

i found a 2005 buffalo nickel that is d. And on the back where the buffalo is it is painted like not hand painted but pressed painted. The buffalo is brown, had white hoofs, horns, its shaded,and has like standing on green grass and then it gets lighter going up to like an orange. Ive never seen anything like this.

It has what appears a painted forward facing figure and it's in color, at first I thought it was a sticker but it's the actual coin. At least 3/4 of the posts here are about the goddamn 04 and 05 commemorative nickels and people not knowing it’s worth 5 cents. They are not rare coins. Either these people have room temperature IQ or are so desperate for cash that they take any different looking coin and pray that it’s worth 80000. Just look up "nickel with boat" or "2005 nickel with Buffalo". You don’t need to ask anyone it’s all on the internet. You really have to be 100% sure so you have to post your 5 cent nickel to every damn coin board because you are still holding on to that chance that your coin is rare even though every single coin website tells you that it’s worth a nickel, so you look for human conformation And you probably will still continue to think it’s rare even after everyone you ask is telling you it’s worth a nickel. Get a job or something.

Found a 2006 D Jefferson Nickel with a 180 degree rotation on the reverse side... Can anyone tell me how much it is worth? I've been searching online for weeks, but with out any luck... I've been to a couple of coin dealers to get it appraised, but since I live in Germany I can't really get a correct price estimate...
